Our Journey:
The Story of Focus on Family

Before we begin, we’ll turn over to our manager - Brendan Patterson. In this short video he provides an introduction to Focus on Family, sharing a brief evolution of our journey through to where we are today.

Since our inception in the early 1990’s, we have been dedicated to supporting individuals, families and children. We began our journey with focus on helping single mothers, addressing their unique challenges, and have since evolved to support the entire family unit. What started off as a small initiative - within just one of the five houses in our building - has truly blossomed; we have now expanded into all five houses and proudly support a plethora of projects, initiatives, communities and areas.

Our centre emerged as a community response to the needs identified in our area, providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals and families facing various challenges. Initially, we offered essential services such as child care and parenting classes, laying a strong foundation for childhood development and family well-being.

As the needs of our community evolved, so did we. With a growing awareness of child development and family support, we expanded our services to include a wider range of programmes that promote emotional, social and educational growth. Our offerings now include workshops, short courses, counselling services, recreational and health based activities and also family activities that are designed to strengthen bonds and improve communication among family members. Through collaborations with organisations and agencies local to the Causeway Coast and Glens area of Northern Ireland, we are able to provide targeted support for families and individuals grappling with specific issues, such as mental health challenges or financial difficulties.

Today, we remain a vital resource in Ballysally, and are known for our unwavering commitment to the nurturing and development of individuals, families and communities. While we focus on the immediate needs of infants and children, we also understand the importance of holistic family support. With a dedicated team of professionals and volunteers, our mission is to empower individuals and families, foster resilience and nurture a sense of community - striving to ensure that every child grows up in a healthy and supportive environment. The legacy of our founding principles continues to influence our work, as we aim to make a lasting positive impact in the lives of individuals and families across Coleraine, and beyond.

Our Nurturing & Development Centre

Our Nurturing & Development Centre - in Ballysally, Coleraine - is a welcoming environment designed to support individuals, families and children living in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas. The building - comprised of five houses - offers distinct spaces for various activities, including well-equipped classrooms, play areas and rooms for workshops and support groups. We recognise the immense importance of education - and the role it plays in shaping young minds.

Outdoor spaces provide opportunities for exploration and play, nurturing children’s physical and emotional well-being - helping foster curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. The ‘child care’ services offered within Focus on Family are thoughtfully designed to support them in reaching both developmental and educational milestones. We provide them with a strong foundation for life-long learning, and personal growth.

Accessibility and inclusivity are prioritised, ensuring that all visitors feel comfortable and welcome. The building is equipped with a chairlift to ensure that our elderly and disabled visitors can easily access all services without any difficulty.

Overall, our centre serves as a vital hub for nurturing family relationships - empowering both individuals and families to thrive.

Our organisation is a non-profit that deeply depends on the generosity of donations, grant-based funding and strategic partnerships. It is this vital support that empowers us to deliver essential services and drive impactful community nurturing and development efforts - and it is through these services that we support individuals and families facing significant socioeconomic challenges, helping them navigate difficult times and improve their quality of life.

We value staff and volunteers equally, and it is their feedback - alongside genuine community needs - that helps us align our services to areas where we know we can make a real difference.

When businesses, donors and the public come together to support organisations like ours, they have the incredible opportunity to make a profound difference in the lives of individuals, and families, from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. These partnerships are not just financial contributions; they are lifelines of hope and opportunity. By sponsoring services that focus on mental health, education and employability - we can help break down the barriers that hold people back, enabling them to rise above their circumstances and reach their full potential. Each donation, no matter how small, is a step toward building a brighter future, creating a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond the immediate community. This collective effort not only empowers individuals to transform their own lives, but also fosters a sense of solidarity, reminding us all that together we can cultivate a more compassionate and equitable society - where everyone has the chance to succeed.
