It’s Okay Not to Be Okay: Why Prioritising Your Mental Health is A Superpower
Investing in Yourself
We’ve been taught that ‘strength’ means pushing through, staying silent, and wearing a mask of total composure. In reality though, the bravest thing that you can do isn’t to ‘pretend’ that you are fine - it is acknowledging when you aren't, and accepting that you might need a little help.
Prioritising your mental health is not a sign of weakness, or a luxury that’s held only for some. No! It is a superpower (in its own right) which enables you to navigate the inevitability of life’s storms - and with resilience and clarity.
When we treat our mental health with the same urgency as we would our physical health, we unlock a version of ourselves that is more present, more capable and more connected…. Whether you’re dealing with daily stress, or deep-set trauma - understanding that your internal world needs (and deserves) maintenance is, quite literally, the first step towards lasting change.
Here in Northern Ireland, accessing support has become much more streamlined through the introduction of ‘Multi-Disciplinary Teams’ (MDTs) within GP Surgeries. When you contact your local practice, you can often book an appointment directly with a Mental Health Practitioner (MHP) - these include specialists like a psychiatric nurse or an occupational therapist - without needing to see your GP first. These experts provide rapid assessments and short-term interventions right at the surgery. This massively bridges the gap between initial concerns and specialist care. Your MHP can also refer you to formal Trust-based talking therapies. Though you can also explore self-referral options through local organisations like AWARE NI or Action Mental Health.
While we are proud to offer our dedicated in-house counselling service (see below) - available thanks to our longstanding, and successful, partnership with Northern Regional College - to support our community directly, we also believe in the power of collective care.
As of this, we’d like to highlight the following services that are currently making a huge difference across Northern Ireland. *Based on heartfelt feedback, and the positive impacts we have noticed in individuals who have availed of these services.
